Swim Class Levels

Parent/Tot swim classes - These classes are designed for kids six months to three years old. This class permanently enforces the parent/child bond by allowing children to get introduced to the water with their parents in the pool. The goal of the class is to develop healthy aquatic habits to last a lifetime.

Preschool swim classes (Pike, Eel, Ray, Starfish) - These classes are for children three to five years old. Some of the experiences will be taught with a flotation device. Water games are introduced along with personal safety objectives.

Youth swim classes (Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, Advanced Swim Skills) - These classes are for children six years of age and older. In the earliest levels, children will be introduced to the water with floating and paddling techniques. In the advanced stages, participants will master all strokes, as well as competitive skills and safety and rescue techniques.

Adult swim classes - These classes are designed for adults aged 18 and older. This class is beneficial for non-swimmers and beginning swimmers. Water adjustment and various swim strokes will be introduced and developed.

Private/Semi-private classes - These classes are available for any age or skill level. Half-hour private lessons are available for children interested in working in a one-on-one or two-on-one setting with a private instructor. Private lessons are available in a package located at the Welcome Center.

Evaluate Your Child's Ability

Use the following information to determine which skill level is appropriate for your child.

Eel - Intermediate - Child can jump into the water and return to the side independently. Children will become more independent by learning to swim longer distances.

Ray/Starfish - Advanced - Child can swim the width and length of the pool on their front and back. At this level, new skills include rhythmic breathing and diving.

Polliwog I - For children 6 and older who have not had swim lessons before. Participants may be fearful of water, cannot tread water or float independently. Your child will learn front, back, and side swimming in this beginner level.

Guppy - For children that are able to swim one length of the pool comfortably on their front or back. At this level, they begin to swim longer distances and are introduced to rhythmic breathing and treading water.

Minnow - For children that are able to swim two lengths of the pool using front crawl with good and consistent rotary breathing. The progression continues with breaststroke, sidestroke, back crawl, and diving.

Advanced Stroke Techniques - This advanced class prepares your child for swim team and works on refining strokes, starts, turns, and techniques. Your child must be comfortable with all strokes.
